What Are You Reading?: Christian Coen

What book are you reading currently? (don’t worry—no spoliers!)

I have just finished reading Lies Women Believe by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth (the updated and revised version). The focus of this book is to help women fight against the sinful lies we believe with the truth of the gospel.

What has been your favorite thing about the book?

My favorite thing about Lies Women Believe is its continual affirmation of the gospel in light of the thoughts and challenges we face as women in daily life. With its lie vs. truth presentation, this book shows how women focus on small sinful thoughts and choices that grow into lies we accept as truth. In understanding how these lies form, Nancy brings perspective to how the truth of Scripture and the work of Christ smash the lies in our lives and remind us of the One who is wholly true and whose Word is truth.

How has this book challenged you?

Lies Women Believe has challenged me to think about my emotions and circumstances with the perspective of God’s divine providence and security in mind. The last chapter concludes with truths about God and the Scriptures to remind us of who He is. This portion of the book has been indispensable and a great encouragement to me and the lies that trigger my mind. This book has reminded me of the hymn, Like A River Glorious, with its ending refrain, “Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed. Finding as he promised, Perfect peace and rest.” By keeping our hearts and minds on Christ, we will remember the Truth.

Would you recommend this to your friends?

I would absolutely recommend this book to my friends. We are just about to finish this book with the women in my covenant group. Lies Women Believe has been a challenge and encouragement to us as we embrace Christ and what He has done for us in spite of our sinfulness and the discouragements we face. With the reminders of His truth, we have grown in Christ personally and as fellow believers reminding each other of His all sufficient grace and the peace that He brings.

My name is Christian Coen. I graduated from The College at Southeastern in May 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies and English. Soon after I married my husband William (who is also a SEBTS alumnus), had two little boys, William Carl and Jackson, and am now serving alongside my husband, who is the pastor of Skypointe Church in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. I am a homeschooling SAHM (Stay at Home Mom) who loves to cook, paint, travel, and serve the local church. I was born and raised in Durham, NC, but as we say in South Carolina "nothing could be finer" than living here.
